Canines are often uncomfortable going to the veterinarian or animal hospital. This is the place they get poked and prodded and often go when they are not feeling well. Here are three tips to help make your canine companion more comfortable at an animal hospital.
- The first thing you can do is call the hospital and ask if you can bring your canine to the hospital for a walk around the office (no examination) and have the staff and or you the pet parent give your canine special and yummy treats. This will help your canine associate being at the hospital with good things instead of getting his temperature taken.
- Another exercise is to practice handling your canine like a veterinarian might. When you are at home relaxing with your canine, look in his mouth and ears, feel his abdomen and touch those paws, nails, and paw pads. Notice places your canine is sensitive and give your canine treats when you are gently touching those areas.
- Some hospitals have daycare, canine behavior training or other fun activities for your canine to participate in. This is another great way for your canine to associate positive and even fun things at the hospital.
When you do need to go in for a examination, don't forget your canine's favorite treat and or toy!
